Ashton in Benghazi promises rebels EU support

The European Union’s head of foreign policy has gone to Benghazi in Libya promising support for the rebels who are fighting to overthrow Colonel Gaddafi’s regime.

Catherine Ashton is the most senior foreign official to visit the country since the uprising began.

She also opened an EU office in Benghazi, the rebel stronghold city, and the epicentre of the anti-Gaddafi movement that erupted in February.

Ashton said: “By opening the office of the European Union, I bring the commitment of the European Union’s 27 Member States – and all of the institutions – in support of the people of Benghazi and of the people of Libya.”

She was greeted warmly on the streets of Benghazi.
